When it comes to the wedding registry, the options are endless. It can be overwhelming trying to decide a balance of practical and “just for fun” items to include. After all, you don’t want to end up with a bunch of stuff you never use. So, while there are plenty of articles out there that supply you with a list of what to include, here’s some wedding registry tips for things we think you can do without.
1. Fine China
You might think you need a 12-piece set of expensive china, but the truth is, you probably won’t use it very often. If you’re not planning on hosting Thanksgiving dinner anytime soon, save yourself the hassle and skip the china. Unless it’s something you’ve always dreamed of owning or you have the extra storage space, opt for dishware that’s more practical. Don’t worry about getting a set just because someone told you it’s a must-have for every bride. (Hint: it’s definitely not!)
2. Crystal Stemware
Similar to fine china, crystal stemware is something else you probably won’t use very often—if ever. If you’re not planning on having many formal dinner parties in your future, there’s no need to add stemware to your registry. Instead, focus on getting items that you will actually use and will make your everyday life easier.
3. Kitchen Gadgets
When it comes to kitchen gadgets, there are some things that are essential—like a good set of knives or a quality blender—and then there are those that are less necessary—like an egg maker or a popcorn machine. A key wedding registry tip for kitchen gadgets is thinking about which ones will actually get used and which ones will end up collecting dust in a cabinet somewhere. Chances are, unless you’re an avid cook or baker, most of those specialty kitchen gadgets will go unused. So save yourself the headache down the road and only register for the essentials.
4. Things That Aren’t “Gift-Worthy”
Okay, this one may sound confusing. What we mean is that sometimes couples put things on their registry that are rather mundane. For example, if you put things like trash bags, laundry soap, or windex on a registry, your guests are more likely to avoid purchasing those items. Think about it, when a guest chooses a gift, they’re hoping that you think of them every time you use it. While being practical when choosing items for your registry is important, being overly mundane is a mistake to avoid.
5. Bath Towels
Nowadays, almost everyone has a nice set of bath towels—so there’s no need to register for more unless you’re in dire need of an upgrade (in which case, go ahead and add them to your list). Instead of towels, focus on other bathroom essentials like a shower curtain or bathroom rug—something that will make your daily routine a little easier (and more enjoyable).
Ultimately, your wedding registry should be a reflection of your style and taste as a couple. It should be filled with items that you will love and use often. With that said, there’s no need to go overboard. Stick to the basics and skip the unnecessary items. Your future self will thank you later!
